Immigration : Look who's ‘nativist’ now!

(For more on this, see "Mexican immigration law versus U.S. immigration law.")

Needless to say, America is the only developed nation that allows illegal aliens to gain full citizenship for their children merely by dropping them on U.S. soil.

Take Sweden -- one of the left's favorite countries. Not only is there no birthright citizenship, but even the children of legal immigrants cannot become Swedish citizens simply by being born there. At least one parent must be a citizen for birth on Swedish soil to confer citizenship.

(Applicants also have to know the lyrics to at least one ABBA song, which explains why you don't see groups of Mexicans congregating outside Ikea stores.)

Liberals are constantly hectoring Americans to adopt Sweden's generous welfare policies without considering that one reason Sweden's welfare policies haven't bankrupted the country (yet) is that the Swedes don't grant citizenship to the children of any deadbeat who manages the spectacular feat of giving birth on Swedish soil.

In Britain, only birth to at least one British citizen or the highest class of legal immigrant, a "settled" resident with the right to remain, such as Irish citizens, confers citizenship on a child born in England. And if the British birthright is through the father, he must be married to the mother (probably a relic from Victorian times when marriage was considered an important institution).

Even Canada, the country most similar to the United States, grants citizenship upon birth -- but excludes the noncitizen parents of anchor babies from receiving benefits, such as medical care, schooling and other free stuff given to Canadian citizens.

After MSNBC'S favorite half-black guest, professor Melissa Harris-Lacewell, made the dazzling point last week that "all babies are anchor babies" because "I certainly know my 8-year-old has anchored the heck out of my life," thereby winning this week's witty wordplay contest, she claimed to be stumped on how citizenship could possibly be determined if not by location of birth.

"I want Americans to pause for a moment and ask themselves," Harris-Lacewell said portentously, "on what basis would you determine citizenship, if not based on where a child is born?" (Luckily for Harris-Lacewell, U.S. citizenship is not granted on problem-solving abilities.)

Harris was off and running, babbling: "Do you have to have two parents who are citizens? How about grandparents? How about great-grandparents?"

I don't know -- how does Sweden do it? How about Denmark? Maybe we should check the laws of every other country in the universe -- especially the ones liberals are relentlessly demanding we emulate!

Or is Ms. Lacewell one of those chest-thumping, nationalistic nativists who becomes hysterical when anyone brings up foreign law? Where is The New York Times when we need it?

The Times' editorial denouncing "nativist" conservatives ended with this little homily: "(Republicans) might want to re-read James Madison's description in the Federalist Papers of the ideal legislator: 'He ought not to be altogether ignorant of the law of nations.'"

Of course, conservatives' objection to judges looking to foreign law is that they're judges, not legislators -- least of all "ideal legislators."

Judges are supposed to be interpreting a constitution and laws written by legislators, not legislating from the bench. Hey, whose turn is it to remind The New York Times that the legislative branch of our government is different from the judicial branch?

As the Times' own august quote from James Madison indicates, he was referring to "the ideal legislator," not "the ideal Supreme Court justice."

In its haste to call conservatives names, the Times not only gave away that they think judges are supposed to be "legislators" -- a point they've been denying for decades -- but also provided a ringing endorsement for ending birthright citizenship.

Not being an easily frightened nativist like Harris-Lacewell, I think we should look at other countries' laws, then adopt the good ones and pass on the bad ones.

For example, let's skip clitorectomies, arranged marriages, dropping walls on homosexuals, honor killings and the rest of the gorgeous tapestry of multiculturalism.

Instead, how about we adopt foreign concepts such as disallowing frivolous lawsuits, having loser-pays tort laws, and requiring that both parents be in the U.S. legally and at least one parent be a citizen, for a child born here to get automatic citizenship?

Or (to paraphrase my favorite newspaper) has nativism in American politics become so rampant that it is considered scandalous in Democratic circles for a legislator to acknowledge paying any attention to foreign countries and their laws? If so, then Democrats might want to re-read James Madison's description in the Federalist Papers of the ideal legislator: "He ought not to be altogether ignorant of the law of nations."

http://www.jewishworldreview.com/cols/coulter081910.php3

I am making these changes because I am convinced that most of the ideas that have dominated public education in America have worked against you, against your teachers and against our country.
<p ="yiv546042857Msonormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<p ="yiv546042857Msonormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">First, this school will no longer honor race or ethnicity. I could not care less if your racial makeup is black, brown, red, yellow or white. I could not care less if your origins are African, Latin American, Asian or European, or if your ancestors arrived here on the Mayflower or on slave ships.
<p ="yiv546042857Msonormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<p ="yiv546042857Msonormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">The only identity I care about, the only one this school will recognize is your individual identity -- your character, your scholarship, your humanity. And the only national identity this school will care about is American. This is an American public school, and American public schools were created to make better Americans.
<p ="yiv546042857Msonormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<p ="yiv546042857Msonormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">If you wish to affirm an ethnic, racial or religious identity through school, you will have to go elsewhere. We will end all ethnicity-, race-and non-American nationality-based celebrations. They undermine the motto of America , one of its three central values -- e pluribus unum, "from many, one" And this school will be guided by America 's values.
<p ="yiv546042857Msonormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<p ="yiv546042857Msonormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">This includes all after-school clubs. I will not authorize clubs that divide students based on any identities. This includes race, language, religion, sexual orientation or whatever else may become in vogue in a society divided by political correctness.
<p ="yiv546042857Msonormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<p ="yiv546042857Msonormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">Your clubs will be based on interests and passions, not blood, ethnic, racial or other physically defined ties. Those clubs just cultivate narcissism -- an unhealthy preoccupation with the self -- while the purpose of education is to get you to think beyond yourself. So we will have clubs that transport you to the wonders and glories of art, music, astronomy, languages you do not already speak, carpentry and more. If the only extracurricular activities you can imagine being interesting in are those based on ethnic, racial or sexual identity, that means that little outside of yourself really interests you.
<p ="yiv546042857Msonormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<p ="yiv546042857Msonormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">Second, I am uninterested in whether English is your native language. My only interest in terms of language is that you leave this school speaking and writing English as fluently as possible. The English language has united America 's citizens for over 200 years, and it will unite us at this school. It is one of the indispensable reasons this country of immigrants has always come to be one country. And if you leave this school without excellent English language skills, I would be remiss in my duty to ensure that you will be prepared to successfully compete in the American job market. We will learn other languages here -- it is deplorable that most Americans only speak English -- but if you want classes taught in your native language rather than in English, this is not your school.
<p ="yiv546042857Msonormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<p ="yiv546042857Msonormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">Third, because I regard learning as a sacred endeavor, everything in this school will reflect learning's elevated status. This means, among other things, that you and your teachers will dress accordingly. Many people in our society dress more formally for Hollywood events than for church or school. These people have their priorities backward. Therefore, there will be a formal dress code at this school.
<p ="yiv546042857Msonormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<p ="yiv546042857Msonormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">Fourth, no obscene language will be tolerated anywhere on this school's property -- whether in class, in the hallways or at athletic events. If you can't speak without using the f-word, you can't speak. By obscene language I mean the words banned by the Federal Communications Commission, plus epithets such as "Nigger," even when used by one black student to address another black, or "bitch," even when addressed by a girl to a girlfriend. It is my intent that by the time you leave this school, you will be among the few your age to instinctively distinguish between the elevated and the degraded, the holy and the obscene.
<p ="yiv546042857Msonormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<p ="yiv546042857Msonormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">Fifth, we will end all self-esteem programs. In this school, self-esteem will be attained in only one way -- the way people attained it until decided otherwise a generation ago -- by earning it. One immediate consequence is that there will be one valedictorian, not eight.
<p ="yiv546042857Msonormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<p ="yiv546042857Msonormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">Sixth, and last, I am reorienting the school toward academics and away from politics and propaganda. No more time will devoted to scaring you about smoking and caffeine, or terrifying you about sexual harassment or global warming. No more semesters will be devoted to condom wearing and teaching you to regard sexual relations as only or primarily a health issue. There will be no more attempts to convince you that you are a victim because you are not white, or not male, or not heterosexual or not Christian. We will have failed if any one of you graduates this school and does not consider him or herself inordinately lucky -- to be alive and to be an American.
<p ="yiv546042857Msonormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<p ="yiv546042857Msonormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">Now, please stand and join me in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of our country. As many of you do not know the words, your teachers will hand them out to you.

They outlined a plan to socialize America by overwhelming the system with government spending and entitlement demands. Add up the clues below. Taken individually they're alarming. Taken as a whole, it is a brilliant, Machiavellian game plan to turn the United States into a socialist/Marxist state with a permanent majority that desperately needs government for survival ... and can be counted on to always vote for bigger government. Why not? They have no responsibility to pay for it.

<span ="apple-style-span">--Universal health care. Obama doesn't care that giving free health care to 30 million Americans will add trillions to the national debt. What he does care about is that it cements the dependence of those 30 million voters to Democrats and big government. Who but a socialist revolutionary would pass this reckless spending bill in the middle of a depression?

<p ="Msonormal" style="line-height: 14.4pt;">

<span ="apple-style-span">--Cap and trade. Like health care legislation having nothing to do with health care, cap and trade has nothing to do with global warming. It has everything to do with redistribution of income, government control of the economy and a criminal payoff to Obama's biggest contributors. Those powerful and wealthy unions and contributors (like GE, which owns NBC, MSNBC and CNBC) can then be counted on to support everything Obama wants. They will kick-back hundreds of millions of dollars in contributions to Obama and the Democratic Party to keep them in power. The bonus is that all the new taxes on Americans with bigger cars, bigger homes and businesses helps Obama "spread the wealth around."

<span ="apple-style-span">-- Make Puerto Rico a state. Why? Who's asking for a 51st state? Who's asking for millions of new welfare recipients and government entitlement addicts in the middle of a depression? Certainly not American taxpayers. It went to save GM and Chrysler so that their employees could keep paying union dues. It went to AIG so that Goldman Sachs could be bailed out (after giving Obama almost $1 million in contributions). A staggering $125 billion went to teachers (thereby protecting their union dues). All those public employees will vote loyally Democrat to protect their bloated salaries and pensions that are bankrupting America.
Immigration : Senators Challenge Obama, Executive Order Amnesty

    Author: Voice_Of_Reason
Subject: Senators Challenge Obama, Executive Order Amnesty
Posted: Jun 22 2010 at 10:00am

Senators Challenge Pres. Obama on Rumors of Executive Order Amnesty
Monday, June 21, 2010, 4:58 PM EDT - posted on NumbersUSA

Several Senators have learned of a possible plan by the Obama Administration that would provide a mass Amnesty for the nation's 11-18 million illegal aliens. Led by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), eight Senators addressed a letter to the President asking for answers to questions about a plan that would allow DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano to provide an amnesty if they can't secure enough votes for a bill in the Senate.

The letter that was sent to Pres. Obama earlier today asks the President for clarification on the use of deferred action or parole for illegal aliens. The executive actions are typically used in special cases and are evaluated on a case-by-case basis, but if 60 votes can't be secured in the Senate to pass a mass Amnesty, the Administration may use the discretionary actions as an alternative.

Here is the text of the letter signed by Sens. Grassley, Hatch (R-Utah), Vitter (R-La.), Bunning (R-Ky.), Chambliss (R-Ga.), Isakson (R-Ga.), Inhofe (R-Okla.), and Cochran (R-Miss.).

Dear President Obama:

We understand that there’s a push for your Administration to develop a plan to unilaterally extend either deferred action or parole to millions of illegal aliens in the United States. We understand that the Administration may include aliens who have willfully overstayed their visas or filed for benefits knowing that they will not be eligible for a status for years to come. We understand that deferred action and parole are discretionary actions reserved for individual cases that present unusual, emergent or humanitarian circumstances. Deferred action and parole were not intended to be used to confer a status or offer protection to large groups of illegal aliens, even if the agency claims that they look at each case on a “case-by-case” basis.

While we agree our immigration laws need to be fixed, we are deeply concerned about the potential expansion of deferred action or parole for a large illegal alien population. While deferred action and parole are Executive Branch authorities, they should not be used to circumvent Congress’ constitutional authority to legislate immigration policy, particularly as it relates to the illegal population in the United States.

The Administration would be wise to abandon any plans for deferred action or parole for the illegal population. Such a move would further erode the American public’s confidence in the federal government and its commitment to securing the borders and enforcing the laws already on the books.

We would appreciate receiving a commitment that the Administration has no plans to use either authority to change the current position of a large group of illegal aliens already in the United States, and ask that you respond to us about this matter as soon as possible.

Edited by Voice_Of_Reason - Jun 22 2010 at 10:00am

Political Correctness Run Amok : Residents offended by Hallmark card

But local NAACP leaders have said it sounds too much like "black whore" or "black ho."
<P =articleDate>The card, which features cartoon dogs "Hoops and Yoyo" bantering about taking over the universe - including its planets and black holes - caused severe emotional pain, residents told the Carson City Council on Tuesday night.
<P =articleDate>Residents and council members said the card should be hurriedly removed because it has offended them. Some local NAACP and council members went so far as to say that any product that offends anyone should be recalled.
<P =articleDate>Olivia Verrett, president of the Carson-Torrance branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said the emotional pain she and others felt when they heard the card cannot be described reasonably.
<P =articleDate>"There is no intellectual point of view and there's no scientific point of view you can refer to - hurt is hurt," Verrett told the council. "You cannot describe hurt any other way than how you feel it
<DIV =articleDate>.inside. Hallmark has put out this cryptic information and only those individuals to whom Hoops and Yoyo are directing this to understand what they are saying."
<P =articleDate>Verrett said the NAACP is actually promoting unity by protesting the card because it encourages people to be more culturally sensitive. The council wholeheartedly agreed with her in a unanimous vote to support a resolution urging Hallmark Cards Inc. to quickly remove the cards from all stores where it is sold nationwide.
<P =articleDate>While representatives of the greeting card company maintain that this is a misunderstanding and that the card is solar-system based, not racist, they have agreed to get rid of inventory of the card and to urge stores to destroy it.
<DIV =articleDate>
<P =articleDate>"We believe that in the context of the copy itself, the intent of the card is clear: that after graduation there is a universe of opportunity and that this graduate is ready to take it on," Hallmark said in a written statement. "We regret that any consumer would misinterpret or misunderstand the language used in this particular card."
<P =articleDate>Local resident Maryanne O'Neil defended the card's use of the phrase "black holes."
<P =articleDate>"You really cannot talk about the solar system without mentioning black holes," she said. "Anytime you pick up a scientific textbook and you're talking about the cosmos, you have to have some discussion of black holes."
<P =articleDate>But the council sided strongly with those residents who took offense to the card.
<P =articleDate>Councilman Elito Santarina added an amendment to the resolution that "this kind of advertisement will never be accepted in the city of Carson. We are very, very sensitive to our diversity. We love it all."
<P =articleDate>The card reads: "You're graduating? Well then, it's time to let the world know what's coming. ... But not only the world, noooo! We're talking the entire solar system! The world is yours, grad!"
<P =articleDate>High-pitched voices in the card's automated recording jokingly threaten the world and universe: "You better watch out 'cause this graduate here's kicking rear and takin' names (laughter). This graduate's gonna run the world, run the universe, and run everything after that, whatever that is. And you black holes - you're so ominous (laughter). Congratulations! And you planets - watch your back!"
<P =articleDate>Councilman Mike Gipson went so far as to say that the city's resolution should be delivered to all local stores that sell the Hallmark card.
<P =articleDate>"I think we need to really pray for our country and pray for what we're going for right now in terms of issues of racism and subliminal messages that affect our children," he said.
<P =articleDate>Resident Imani Robinson asked residents to contact Hallmark and ask for an apology to all black women.
<P =articleDate>"Shame on you Hallmark Cards," Robinson said. "Hallmark - for whatever reason - chose to characterize African-American females as black holes. I will say this: black holes are very dangerous and destructive. I would challenge Hallmark to do something more than merely trying to get the cards back and to really apologize for characterizing me as a black hole."
<DIV =articleDate>
<DIV =articleDate>sandy.mazza@dailybreeze.com
<DIV =articleDate>
<DIV =articleDate>http://www.dailybreeze.com/ci_15312600?IADID=Search-www.dailybreeze.com-www.dailybreeze.com
